Tips for Buying a New Air Conditioner

What to Look for When Shopping for a New Air Conditioner

When the muggy summer air lingering throughout your home becomes too much and you just need a decent night’s sleep, it might be time to purchase a new air conditioner. If you know the time has come to replace that old air conditioning unit or to install a new one, here are some things you should look for when shopping for a new air conditioning unit:

Room Air Conditioner/Central Air – Central air conditioning easily is the preferred way to cool a home.  It’s quieter, out of the way, convenient to operate and more efficient. But, it’s also a much greater investment. If you live in an apartment or very small space, a window unit might be an adequate choice.  or if your home needs extensive ductwork to accommodate a new system, it may end up being more work and money than you can afford.  But if you can afford it, the central air unit is the better cooling choice.

Energy Efficiency – The biggest thing to consider when investing in a new central air conditioning unit is efficiency. Central air conditioners are rated according to their seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). SEER indicates the relative amount of energy needed to provide a specific cooling output. Look for the ENERGY STAR® label for central air conditioners with SEER ratings of 13 or greater, but consider using air conditioning equipment with higher SEER ratings for even greater savings.

Other Air Conditioner Features to Consider

  • Quiet system
  • Variable speed air handler
  • Filter check light

Cooling Capacity – Have a certified heating, venting and air conditioning (HVAC) dealer visit your home and determine what size of air conditioning unit is right for your space. Too small of a unit will not adequately cool your home or reduce the humidity levels. Too large a unit will simply cost you too much money.  A professional can determine what size unit is best for your home.

Dealer – Find a reputable and trusted Minnesota air conditioning expert, such as your local Carrier dealer, and get a few bids on the unit brand, size, and installation process and price. Be sure to get the bids in writing. You absolutely need a professional involved so that you can be sure your unit is installed properly, as the biggest cause of inefficiency in air conditioning units is improper installation (wasted money on energy bills).

Today’s air conditioning units use 30-50% less energy than those used in the mid-70’s. Even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you may save 20-40% of your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model. Purchasing and having a new high efficiency air conditioner unit installed in your home can mean greater overall comfort, great savings on your energy bills, and a better night’s sleep.
