Spring Cleaning Your HVAC

Spring cleaning begins with your HVAC.

Spring cleaning begins with your HVAC.

Spring brings longer days, warmer breezes, blooming flowers…and cleaning lists. The change of seasons is the perfect opportunity to start anew and complete that to-do list, which has been sitting idly by. Spring cleaning goes beyond emptying out the garage and dusting nooks and crannies. Maintaining your HVAC is a crucial step to keep your house in tip-top shape year-round.

It’s a good idea to check your air conditioning and heating equipment at the change of the season. This time is when you fluctuate between heavily using your furnace to kicking in with cool air. The last thing you want is for the unit to fail when temperatures become more extreme in summer. Mild spring weather is the perfect time to schedule your annual tune-up. This should be done by a professional, but here are some tasks to complete on your end.

1. If you have a fiberglass filter, you should already be changing it out every month. HEPA filters on the other hand last up to six months. Whip out the vacuum nozzle to simultaneously clean up carpet and the filters.

2. Clean the drainage hole beneath the evaporator fins. It’s as simple as using the end of a paper clip and clearing the hole.

3. Remove the housing of the dehumidifier, let it dry completely, and vacuum every available surface and crevice.

4. Take the cover off bathroom fans, wash it in soapy water, and clean dirt off the fan blades with a toothbrush. The power needs to be off first!

5. Make sure there is a fully charged fire extinguisher available for emergencies.

Move onto organizing the closet once you’ve ensured your home will remain cool and comfortable with these spring cleaning HVAC tips!
